  • First Tracks is an online mountain responsibility education program designed to help skiers and snowboarders build the awareness, responsibility, and confidence to share the mountain safely. Our lessons complement traditional ski and snowboard instruction by focusing on the decision-making skills that create better experiences on the mountain.

  • First Tracks is designed for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and experience levels. While many of our current programs are created for school-aged students, the principles of awareness, responsibility, and confidence apply to everyone who enjoys the mountain.

  • Not at all.

Whether it's your first day on the mountain or you've been skiing and snowboarding for years, good decision-making, awareness, and responsibility remain essential. Every skier and snowboarder can benefit from developing these lifelong habits.

  • First Tracks was created by two sisters who bring together a unique combination of lifelong skiing experience, elite competition, education, community leadership, and more than thirty years of professional expertise in risk management and accident prevention.

Rather than teaching people how to ski or snowboard, First Tracks teaches them how to share the mountain—building habits that last a lifetime.

  • No. Ski schools and instructors are the experts in teaching skiing and snowboarding techniques.

First Tracks focuses on mountain responsibility—helping participants understand trail maps, signs and symbols, lift safety, mountain etiquette, the NSAA’s Responsibility Code, and the decision-making skills that contribute to a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • The best preparation happens before the first run.

By learning what to expect before arriving at the resort, participants begin their day with greater awareness, confidence, and understanding of how to navigate the mountain responsibly.

  • Each lesson is designed to be engaging, easy to follow, and appropriate for the learner's age and experience. Most lessons can be completed in approximately 15–20 minutes, allowing participants to learn at a comfortable pace.

  • Yes.

Because First Tracks is an online program, participants can complete lessons wherever it is most convenient—at home, in the classroom, or as part of a school or resort program.

  • Every person on the mountain plays a role in creating a safe and enjoyable experience.

Understanding how to recognize hazards, respect others, follow signs, and make thoughtful decisions helps everyone enjoy the mountain with greater confidence and peace of mind.

  • "Own Your Line." is more than our tagline.

It's a reminder that every skier and snowboarder is responsible for the choices they make on the mountain. By staying aware, acting responsibly, and respecting others, each person contributes to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • Speed is one of the most important factors in staying safe on the mountain.
Being in control allows you to avoid obstacles, react to changing conditions, and respect the space of those around you. Choosing a speed that matches your ability, the terrain, and the surrounding traffic helps create a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

  • Mountain responsibility starts with each of us.
By staying aware of your surroundings, respecting other skiers and snowboarders, following signs and the NSAA’s Responsibility Code, and making thoughtful decisions, you help create a safer, more welcoming mountain community where everyone can enjoy their day.

  • Yes.

  • Yes.
First Tracks can be a valuable training resource for seasonal staff, volunteers, ski club leaders, chaperones, and others who support participants on the mountain. • Yes.
We offer partnership opportunities for schools, ski clubs, and ski resorts interested in incorporating First Tracks into their existing programs. Our goal is to complement your educational initiatives while helping participants build lifelong habits for sharing the mountain responsibly.
